“Your mind is like
an unsafe neighborhood;
don’t go there alone.”

— Augusten Burroughs

let’s thrive together.

Considering a change? Psychotherapy can provide a path forward. A therapeutic relationship is more than just having someone to talk to. It is also a consistent and reliable base from which you can re-imagine yourself. Psychotherapy creates a safe space for play, a skill we often forget to use as adults, in order to stimulate your imagination and explore a more realized version of self.

Psychotherapy also allows you to examine the deeper layers of your personal experience in order to remove obstacles to growth. Your creativity and identity as a unique human begin to blossom as you build a complex understanding of your past, how it informs your present, and how you can learn to be more flexible about the future.

About me

JUSTIN DONOFRIO, LCSW

I am thrilled to be on this part of my journey. I have been in private practice for many years and am currently a member of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP) contemporary psychoanalytic institute. My therapeutic approach incorporates a strengths based model to begin the process of change. I am certified in integrative trauma and will often incorporate these ideas to frame my clients’ experience as we build our relationship over time.

For many years I also was the Patient Care Specialist for the Hospital for Special Surgery Peri-operative Pain Service. My role allowed me to confront the opioid crisis from a individual patient-centered perspective. Serving as a health advocate brought me a profound sense of purpose knowing that I was able to create change in patients caught in the middle of this terrible epidemic.

I have had multiple careers prior to returning this work. After studying neuroscience at the University of Connecticut, I felt life was best lived in many directions, so I pursued careers in marketing and acting. As a performer I was able to develop a strong creative process which nutured my imagination and filled me with the ability to flexibly live in the moment. Learning to be present has been incredibly useful in creating states of mutual reverie with my clients.

My training has taught me to think critically about life, and my clients’ lives, and to better understand how environmental impacts shape us. The experience of being ‘othered’ in society is nuanced, however the pain this causes is universal. I like to hold in mind my clients unique experience in the world and how that has impacted how they have come to be who they are.

I revel in the opportunity to uncover your truth and capacities for growth through mutual exploration. I believe it may be the most important journey one can take in life. As Socrates once said: “To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom”.
